The contemporary world indicates different dimensions and various factors are influencing it. The advancements in technology and the digital revolution have also empowered the lower and the middle class of the society. However, its negative usage has also made it a lethal weapon for the acts of terrorism.

Social Media

Social media has changed the way people connect to each other. People love to tweet, update, and comment instead of meeting personally and calling on the phone. The increased visibility has also reduced the private space, and now people can figure out all the details even without meeting a person once.

Social media augments the scope of the virtual world; but is this virtual even close to the real?

Social media provides a large audience to its users. It has been useful in the situations of wars, natural disasters, promoting causes, and launching campaigns. Unlike the electronic media, it is not regulated by the state laws, and hence it provides ventilation for the suppressed thoughts. It has given voice to every connected person.
The privacy and safety issues on social media are certainly an area of concern. The inherent architecture and model of social networking sites encourage interactions and associations. Hence, it is the responsibility of the users to know the visibility of their posts and try to prevent the exposure of information to unintended recipients.

Nationalism

There is a famous saying, “Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it.” It was never more true. From the elections for Brexit to the US elections, the wave of nationalism has dominated the discourse of political debates. In France and Germany, although the nationalist parties could not get a majority, they have got the significant support of the public. The notion of globalization is a tricky subject. Although it breaks the barriers and boundaries of geography, the workers in the developed countries are at the losing end. After all, who will hire them when the services are available at much lower wages? The future of the labor force is quite uncertain. It is difficult for the students to select a career with a bright scope. People having diverse skills will perhaps be more successful.

Never mind doing a task the longer way. You cannot know everything at once.

Role of Technology

Technology is influencing every domain of life. The artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, robotics, wearables, augmented reality, data mining, and other technical aspects are reshaping the technological outlook of the world. However, we also see the misuse of social media data, the increased expenditure on arms and ammunition, and cybercrimes. The technology has also reduced the personalized interactions, and people are more habitual of online interactions and virtual world. It has also affected the mental capabilities and development of the children. They spend less time analyzing the problems and finding solutions. Instead, they find it more convenient to find a solution through a search engine. It is now also difficult to know the writing skills of a writer because grammar checking tools and vocabulary enhancement software do make-up on the original work. A person may get frustrated and try to get out of the technology in its entirety. However, its impacts are so immersed in the society that such a person will soon become isolated from the society.

Artificial Intelligence

Before we work on artificial intelligence why don’t we do something about natural stupidity?
(Steve Polyak)

Data Mining

To find signals in data, we must learn to reduce the noise.
(Stephen Few)

Blockchain

The blockchain symbolizes a shift in power from the centers to the edges of the networks.
(William Mougayar)

Population Ageing

The world’s population is aging. With the growth in the number of senior people, there is increased pressure on the service providers of aged care including residential care, hospice care, home care, and emergency care. It is becoming difficult for the families to care for their seniors while fulfilling their job responsibilities. We need to acknowledge the role of aged-care services.

Those who think they have no time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.

Environmental Concerns

A key victim of industrialization and technological advancements is the environment. The increased levels of carbon emissions and climate changes across the world are a serious area of concern. The earth should be a livable planet for the future generations. We should use green technology, energy-efficient products, and renewable energy and minimize our ecological footprints on the environment. Think long-term for preserving the environment.

Environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented.

Value of Art

One of the drawbacks of the modern society is the diminishing value of art. The science and technology have blurred the line between creativity and automation. Even there are tools of grammar and language correction that enrich the content and add to the aesthetic appeal. Hence, the originality is gone in the cyberspace and so is the appreciation of originality.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.

And this a quote by an Italian artist, Michelangelo:

The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.

It is not only the value of art that is diminishing, but the overall faculties of human beings are deteriorating. We have become so complacent with the conventional wisdom that we hardly challenge these notions and prefer to go with the populism. The creativity and innovation are not always gifted, but they also refine and develop with practice. The content is lost in cosmetics and decoration, and people are satisfied with superficial stuff and rudimentary knowledge. The urge to go deeper and search the truth is replaced with believing what is told by popular media and gossip. Fake news receives prominence because they satisfy the inner instincts of the people, and people read what they want to read.
The good old days of manual work and manual calculation are never going to come back. We have to live with the realities of the modern world. Our ideals and role models will inevitably emerge within these circumstances; however, their impact may not be that lasting as it used to be in earlier times. The weaknesses of human personality are exposed in one way or the other because the preservation of image has been made impossible by the interconnected world of today. I would recommend forgiving people for their follies and be humble in your approach.

Work-life Balance

The challenge in the capitalist societies is that the competition level is severe. The working women are finding it harder to fulfill their domestic responsibilities. Men work in stretched hours in the office and then think whether the job is their life, or just a means to an end. The people devoted to home are also not much happier. They are considered as someone doing nothing. Hence, it is better to establish mental compatibility and spiritual bonding such that the distances become immaterial and two people always support each other.

Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

Choice of Career

Students learn in academic institutions in a career-oriented mindset. They want to work in a specific profession and study the concepts and methodologies of the related discipline. Parents invest a significant portion of their earnings for better education of their children. But what if the scope of the field diminishes, and the new workforce is no more required? Driverless cars are making the profession of drivers in danger, automated cooking through recipes making cooks vulnerable, automation making clerical staff redundant. Hence, I believe the future will require people with diverse skill sets who could make quick adjustments based on the demands of the job market. Also, entrepreneurship and own businesses will become valuable as people increasingly want to have flexible job timings and work according to their capacities and areas of strength. A typical job environment compels the people to work in stretched hours, do uninterested and unrelated work, and make it challenging to find quality time for the family.
